It is based in Zhuhai, Guangdong. It was established in 2003 by Jack Wong who was a high-school dropout. Meizu started its business by manufacturing MP3 players and then MP4 players. In 2008, Meizu started working on smartphones. In 2006, Meizu produced its first MP4 player. Its most popular MP4 player was the M6 Mini Player. It was also marketed by Dane-Elec outside of China.
On April 2007, Meizu released the Meizu M8. There were long queues in front of its stores. It was very much appreciated because of its sound quality, performance and attractive price. More importantly, it was one of the first phones which were having a capacitive touchscreen. It ran on the Mymobile operating system. Its next version was Meizu M8SE that released on October 2, 2009. On January 1, 2011, the company released the Meizu M9. It was their first smartphone running on the Android operating system. It proved to be a huge success in China. Meizu launched its first branch office in Hong Kong in 2011and then in Russia.
